Two Drifters

Hi! We’re Amy & Nathan Hartle from Two Drifters, a newlywed travel & lifestyle blogging couple. We first met in a Scottish hostel (makes an amazing travel/love story) and truly our lives have never been the same. We’ve been blogging since 2012ish, and traveling long term on and off since the same period. We recently decided to “quit” being digital nomads and are in the process of finding a home base. But the travels are far from over!

As bloggers & Instagrammers, we’ve worked with some great brands including American Greetings, Modcloth, Dove Chocolate, as well as some amazing hotels including the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise during our honeymoon.

How would you describe your blog to a person that has never visited it before?

We’re a couple’s travel and relationship blog. We’re all about romance and adventure! While we blog about destinations (especially romantic getaways or couples trips) we also share tips for better, happier relationships. There’s lifestyle stuff too: books, coffee shops, and more. We keep it real & honest on the blog.

What made you decide to create a blog?

Initially, we just wanted to take photos and share them (or maybe sell them!) and share our travel stories. We thought up the idea when we were in a long distance relationship, knowing we could work on a mutual project from afar. It was a nice way to bring us closer together and it still is!

Was there a moment when you thought, “I could do this professionally”? If so, what triggered that desire/realization?

Sometimes, but we’re still having that realization! Haha. Our blog does not yield us a full-time income yet, but we do work 100% online. As freelancers/remote workers, we have the freedom to work whenever, wherever (so long as there is WiFi). We feel really fortunate that these endeavors make us money, but we’re always looking for ways to pump up the blog/influencer income.

What fuels your passion for creating content?

It’s amazing that we live in a world where you can share what drives you, almost instantly. We really enjoy the community-building aspect that content can bring, the shared inspiration, etc. We love to create images we don’t want to look away from. Warm, cozy, and happy images fuel our creativity on our Instagram feed and on the blog, but we love experimenting with other styles and concepts too—stuff we don’t really publish anywhere!

Are there any blogs or publications that you follow closely? What makes them successful in your opinion?

Adventurous Kate has always been a travel blog that Amy likes to read consistently. Kate is such a great personality, and she blends awesome travel guides with great writing and storytelling. Plus she’s funny and her topics are clever and new. It’s the perfect travel blog!

What has been the biggest challenge in maintaining a successful blog?

Time is #1. It is honestly a full time job on top of another full time job. But secondly, a major challenge is keeping at it even when setbacks arise or when you don’t see instant, tangible results. You just have to believe in the potential and keep writing from the heart — and for your target audience. After all, it’s a business. Even the best writers fail to get seen without a strategy!

What is your favorite post that you created? Why?

Ooh, fun question! It is probably To All the Travelers Who Aren’t Traveling, a sort of open letter written to those adventurers at a stand-still. We still get so many people reaching out to us to say this post inspired them or encouraged them when they were feeling aimless. That’s the real goal of blogging, I think, and this post encapsulates that as well as the spirit of the traveler.

What is your favorite social media channel? Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, other? Why?

Instagram, for sure! We love the simplicity of it and the visual nature. It’s not too erratic and overwhelming like Twitter or Facebook. We’ve built our best community there as well so it’s where we have lots of friends! 🙂

Do you have any last piece of advice for aspiring bloggers?

Be unique. There are an insane number of blogs out there. To offer something new and valuable to an audience, you need to be specific about what you’re writing and focusing on. Often, those tiny, super-targeted niche blogs do the best!

Lastly, what is something that you could share with us that we wouldn’t learn from reading your blog?

We’re pretty open about our life on the blog, so it’s tough to come up with something! Not sure if we really mention on the blog however that Nathan writes fiction (sci-fi fantasy) and Amy plays guitar & sings 🙂
