Meet: Jen from Travel with a Plan

Hi!  My name is Jen!  I am a passionate American travel writer at Travel With A Plan, but most importantly a wife and mom to 3 adventurous boys.  I’ve been planning fun, memorable, and hassle-free family trip itineraries for the past 12 years and consider travel to be essential in our family’s overall health and wellbeing.  After all…our travel memories are what keep us connected and happy at home! I love getting to know my readers and helping inspire others to explore the benefits of family travel.

  • How would you describe your blog to a person that has never visited it before?  My motto at Travel With A Plan is to encourage and help others, “Travel with a plan.  Not regret.” In order to do so, I share years worth of practical family travel tips, reviews, and itineraries that work for families.  I like to think that at Travel With A Plan, I help take the work out of travel planning so that you don’t have to.
  • What made you decide to create a blog? I decided to start a travel blog because I did not want the countless hours of research that I put into our own personal family vacations go to waste.  When I look back on our travels and realize that an itinerary, travel product, or travel tip, truly helped make for a fun and hassle-free trip, I wanted a way to share those successes with others…so that families can use them to make the same amazing memories!  I decided to do so in the form of starting a travel blog!
  • What fuels your passion for creating content?  Realizing the amazing benefits of traveling together as a family (and wanting to share those with others) is what fuels my passion for creating content.
  • Are there any blogs or publications that you follow closely? What makes them successful in your opinion?  I closely follow the blog Full Suitcase and am also a featured writer on their site.  Full Suitcase is quite possibly one of the most comprehensive travel blogs in terms of detailed articles on amazing family travel destinations.  There is not one detail of a destination that goes uncovered and their posts are super informative and fun! It is a one-stop-shop in terms of a travel blog!
  • What has been the biggest challenge in maintaining a successful blog?  The biggest challenge in maintaining a successful blog for me has been balancing my love for blogging with my other full-time job.  I am so dedicated and passionate about Travel With A Plan, but I also work full-time outside of the home. It can be difficult finding the time to write as many posts as I would like.
  • What is your favorite post that you created? Why?  My favorite posts that I have created are my Disney World itinerary posts.  A Disney vacation has so many variables, and there is literally so much information online to dig through if you are looking for tips and advice.  I feel that my Magic Kingdom, Animal Kingdom, and Epcot itinerary posts provide all of the information that anyone would ever need in terms of touring the parks in one day.
  • How much does social media influence your writing? This might be a commentary on the posts you read or the way that you tailor your posts for those channels. The only way that I let social media influence my writing is that if I see that there is a topic that readers are particularly interested in, I’ll write a post on that topic if I feel that I have something valuable to say.  I don’t tailor my posts for particular media channels however, for I do not want to lose authenticity and tailor my posts to looking good on social media, versus, simply being valuable for my readers.
  • What is your favorite social media channel? Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, other? Why? My favorite social media channel is Pinterest for I feel that it reaches the largest audience.  It also allows users to pinpoint exactly what they are looking for in the search tab so that it takes less time to find what they are looking for.  Everyone’s time is valuable, and Pinterest is quick, easy to use, and the most effective at narrowing down information.
  • Do you have any last piece of advice for aspiring bloggers?  My last piece of advice for aspiring bloggers it to not expect overnight success, and to start their social media channels as soon as they start their blog.  I waited for a few months before starting my blog Pinterest, Facebook, and Twitter accounts and wish I would have done it right away instead. When you start looking to collaborate with brands, they are very attune to your number of followers (so I would start working on that right away).
  • Lastly, what is something that you could share with us that we wouldn’t learn from reading your blog?  What you wouldn’t learn from reading my blog, is that just like most families, we have a hard time finding the time to travel together as much as we would like.  My husband and I both have full-time jobs and our kids are active in sports and activities. Carving out quality time as a family is always an issue, yet is so very, very important.
